New Gladiators Junior Team Head Coach Appointed - Posted on November 11th, 2016

The Colchester Gladiators Management Committee has been hard at work securing a New Juniors Team Head Coach. With the Gladiators Junior program taking a break in 2016 it was the committee’s top priority to get it back up and running and the Head Coach Role was pivotal to that. Today the Gladiators are happy to announce that they have secured the services of Club Hall of Famer Matt Roberts-Harbour.

Having last coached the Gladiators Seniors in 2014, Coach Roberts-Harbour took a break from BAFA football and spent time setting up the very successful “Game Day Skinz”. Time away from the senior game has renewed his fire for the sport. And a new found passion coaching young people in Suffolk at the fledgling SAFA (Suffolk American Football Academy) put coach Roberts-Harbour in a great position to take on this new challenge. After having a meeting with Chairman David Crane and Treasurer Chris Jackson he was delighted to accept the offer of Junior Team Head Coach. Coach Roberts-Harbour Had the following about his new role.

Matt Roberts-Harbour
“When I met with Chris and Dave itwas vital that they shared my vision for the Junior programme, and I was really enthused that they did. To me the focus will be on developing in the contexts of the wider game. I want to highlight individual athlete development, supply pathways to various levels of the sport domestically and internationally and of course how forge solid links with the senior team. American Football, especially on a Junior level, has a lot of other activities to compete with so it’s vital we provide maximum exposure to competition and participation. I’ve been massively encouraged by the leagues acceptance of smaller formats of the game, such as ‘8 on 8’ and I endeavour to organise fixtures and competitions on a regional basis, potentially across all codes of the game, to ensure our young athletes get the chance to play, develop and see real value for their investment of time and effort…and of course have fun! I look forward to working with the Gladiators committee, and putting together a coaching staff. If anyone out there wants to get in touch, regardless of experience level, I’d love to hear from them.

Chairman Crane remarked that he was “delighted” by the appointment adding, “I’m extremely excited by the additions to the club’s coaching staff at all levels for the coming year. It feels like we’re heading in the right direction this off-season and we hope to announce further additions soon!”
