Gladiators vs Nomads

GLADIATORS MARCHING ON - Posted on February 27th, 2014

The Colchester Gladiators basketball team continued their unbeaten run with a dominant performance against the Anglia Nomads, improving their record to 14-0.

After a tight start to the first quarter, the Gladiators found their rhythm and opened up a healthy lead which they gradually extended throughout the game until late in the fourth with the game already won.

Richard Ese opened the scoring for the Gladiators with a three pointer, and a basket and free throw by Rhett Burton opened up a 6-0 lead. The Nomads fought back though, taking a 7-6 and 9-8 lead before leading scorer Dan Vilkys took over on his way to 39 points in the game. Further scores from Burton, Nathan Syrett and Stuart Stearns in a 12-0 run set the Gladiators on their way and they never looked back.

It was a similar story in the second period. The Nomads closed to within seven but Ese and Zidrunas Valancius kept the Nomads at arm’s length before Vilkys took over the quarter, dominating in the paint, scoring eight straight points for the Gladiators to extend the lead. Syrett and Valancius gave him more scoring support on his way to 15 points in the quarter and a 43-28 half time lead.

Vilkys and Ese notched up 10 points each in the third period as the Gladiators extended their lead to 22 points and Ese and Chris Baker, returning after suffering a calf injury, each sunk a three pointer and the quarter finished 70-50.

There was no let up for the Nomads in the final period as Stearns and Ese continued the domination. Vilkys and Ernesto Valancius took the score to 90-60 before the Gladiators finally relaxed enabling some respectability to be earned by the Nomads with a 12-0 run and after a quick exchange of baskets, Joe Jamito completed the scoring to record the Gladiators’ 14th straight league win.

The Gladiators now just need one win from their last four games or a Deben Jutes loss to mathematically clinch the division title and they host Jutes in their next game at Colchester Academy Sports Centre.
