After a highly successful 2013 season, the Colchester Gladiators senior squad is looking forward to the new season in the Premier Division, the first time the club will have competed in the top tier of American Football since 1992.
The Gladiators secured promotion in their 30th anniversary year with an unbeaten season that culminated in a 33-13 win over Gateshead Senators at the John Charles stadium in Leeds.
Now they will be mixing it with the best teams in the country, such as current champions London Warriors, for whom TV celebrity Vernon Kay plays, London Blitz and Birmingham Bulls.
Last month the Gladiators were recognised regionally as they were runners-up in the Community Club of the Year category at the Active Essex awards, and hope to go one better in the Sport Colchester awards at the Weston Homes Community Stadium next month in the Team of the Year and Coach of the Year categories.
With the Christmas and new year festivities behind them, the Gladiators coaching staff has been arranging preseason training for the forthcoming campaign, starting with the annual rookie day on Sunday 2nd February. This will take place at Colchester Academy Sports Centre, commencing at 10am and will be targeting players new to the sport, and anyone who wants to give it a try. The session will be geared towards having fun, being introduced to the basics of the sport, some drill stations, and finishing with a game.
Full preseason training will commence the following week, also at Colchester Academy Sports Centre at 10am.
Training for the junior and youth teams has already begun but they are always looking for new players, and now is the perfect time to get involved.
The Gladiators run U19 (junior) and U17 (youth) teams and any enquiries should be directed to the junior section head coach, Dave Hogarth, through the Gladiators’ website.
Further information about the Club and contact details for all sections can be found at www.colchestergladiators.com.
