Gladiators vs Jutes

GLADIATORS EDGE DEFENSIVE BATTLE TO REMAIN UNBEATEN - Posted on December 20th, 2013

The Colchester Gladiators basketball team produced a determined, defensive performance to hold on to their unbeaten record going into the Christmas break. They had to dig deep against their closest rivals and with their offence spluttering at times, played good defence to restrict the scoring opportunities of their opponents.

In a low scoring first period, the Gladiators were restricted to just six points. Nathan Syrett opened the scoring with a free throw and Dan Vilkys scored his only points of the quarter before Rhett Burton hit one of his trademark threes to give his team a 6-5 lead. But the Jutes tightened up their defence with a 6-0 run to end the quarter 11-6 ahead.

This was increased to 13-6 before the Gladiators found some rhythm, scoring nine straight points with Andis Leitis and Burton again successful from three point range to take a 15-13 lead. Leitis chipped in with eleven points in the quarter to lead a 10-1 run to give the Gladiators back the lead for good and with Richard Ese keeping the scoreboard ticking over with a couple of baskets, a five point deficit had turned into a five point lead by half time at 27-22.

Vilkys got off to a flyer at the start of the second half, with a quick fire four points and after the Jutes replied with a couple of free throws, Ese and Vilkys led a 12-2 run to blow the game open. In a low scoring game, a 43-26 lead looked comfortable.

The Jutes are in second place for a reason though and a 9-2 run brought them back to within ten as the third quarter ended.

Defences again dominated the final period with the Gladiators failing to win the rebounds like previous games but with both offences struggling, the Gladiators held off to secure their tenth straight win of the season.

The Gladiators remain atop Suffolk League Division Two with a perfect 10-0 record and their next game is at home at Colchester Academy Sports Centre on Wednesday 8th January against Forest Heath Harriers, 8.15pm tip.
